Keswick
Film Club AGM 2003
Digest of the minutes
Keswick
Film Club held its Annual General Meeting at the Alhambra on 23rd
March 2003, when 16 members were present to discuss the past year's
activities
Chairman's
Report: Ian Picken described a very successful Club season,
with an average of well over 100 attending on Sunday evenings.
The Fourth Keswick Film Festival had been a considerable success
too, with an increase in audiences of 50% over the 2002 event,
probably due to the attraction of Nicolas Roeg's presence and
films, and also to the search for films that would appeal to a
wider audience while maintaining the quality of what we present.
On the membership front too, the outlook was promising, with 196
joining in 2002-3, compared to 165 in the previous year. And our
new attachment to North West Arts, via North West Vision, was
bearing fruit, with a generous grant for the Festival being the
most tangible effect to date. The Chairman paid tribute to the
commitment and energy of the Club's committee, and to its dependence
on the goodwill of the Alhambra's owners and Theatre by the Lake,
all of which promised an exciting future.
Tom Rennie
presented his Treasurer's Report for Sept 2001 - Aug 2002
in similarly optimistic terms, although there had been much less
grant income and a considerably more expensive Festival (2002).
It was clear that Keswick Film Festival would rely heavily on
subsidy, so that we would need both to work hard on finding such
support and to look carefully at advertising and promotion costs.
The current year though was already looking in much better financial
shape.
Trustees
and Committee: Ian Picken and Rod Evans constituted the one-third
of trustees retiring at this AGM, but as no other nominations
had been received, they were willing to continue in that capacity.
The officers
of the Club would remain as before, viz. Chairman Ian Picken,
Secretary Rod Evans, Treasurer Tom Rennie, Webmaster Stephen Brown;
David W Miller and John Amos would continue in the roles they
had effectively been fulfilling in recent months, i.e. Festival
Director and Publicity Officer respectively. D David Miller, Brian
Jimack, Alan Smith and Ella Leibowitz (who was co-opted in the
course of the year) would also continue to serve. But Anne Key
had decided to stand down, and she was thanked for all she had
done for the Club as a Committee Member. An invitation was issued
to any member keen to take her place.
Under Other
Business, it was pointed out that the generous offer to give
committee members free entry to films was not allowable under
the Club's Articles of Association. The meeting ended with a warm
vote of thanks to the Committee for their work on behalf of Keswick
Film club.
