A
SUCCESSFUL FILM FESTIVAL
From Keswick Reminder 21st February 2001
The Keswick Film Club organisers
were very pleased with the response of
both local people and visitors to the Second Keswick Film Festival. More
tickets
were sold than last year, and significant numbers of people were present
not only
from Cumbria, but also from much further afield. Tributes such as the
best
Festival of its type I have ever attended were not uncommon, notably
from Tim
Young, university film lecturer and film programmer at The Dukes, Lancaster.
A good number of weekend pass-holders saw many of the 17 feature films
on offer as well as the short film programme, and they delivered positive
feedback about the wide range of films being screened. The themes of both
Literature through the Lens at the Theatre and the Coen
Brothers
Retrospective at the Alhambra proved very popular, and the talks
by film
studies experts were well-attended by keen film-goers who enjoyed the
chance to
listen to knowledgeable speakers and put their own questions.
This educational side to the
Festival is felt by the Film Club to be an
important part of its function, and plans to expand it are already being
laid for
next year. Indeed, next year is now much in the organisers minds:
with the
encouragement of coming successfully through a second festival, always
a more
difficult proposition when the novelty has worn off, the intention is
to offer an
even better event in 2002.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Film Clubs series of Sunday screenings
goes
on until Easter, with some highly -acclaimed, award-winning films in prospect.
