A brief celebration of the rising profile of non-English language cinema in 2001, looking particularly at the alternative visual languages explored in such recent critical successes as Beau Travail and The Wind Will Carry Us among others.

No. 2 "It wasn't Like That In The Book": Some thoughts on adapting literature for the screen

Among the issues to be raised during this general overview of film adaptation will be whether 'fidelity' to the original is essential, possible or even desirable; is adaptation a form of reproduction and illustration or, alternatively, a form of interpretation and translation. With film extracts.

No. 3 "Adapting the Classics"

This lecture will consider some of the issues raised by adapting literary classics for the screen. It will particularly consider some recent adaptations of Jane Austen, Henry James and Edit Wharton, including Mansfield Park and The House Of Mirth.
