Often dismissed as children's entertainment
or a TV schedule-filler, animation is a medium with its own film language, its
own distinctive codes and conventions. The sustained success of the Disney Studios
(Atlantis: The Lost Empire), the rise of
Japanese manga anime (Akira), and the continuing
work of the world's greatest living Surrealist, Jan Svankmajer (Faust),
have prompted our re-evaluation of the importance of animated film.
