By adding 50 minutes to his masterly 1979 Vietnam War movie (already
of epic proportions), Coppola has surprisingly offered us a film
that doesn't appear much longer than before. The story, inspired
by Conrad's Heart of Darkness, charts Capt Willard's (Sheen) trip
up river from Saigon into darkest
Cambodia looking for Col Kurtz (Brando), a brilliant but quite mad
soldier with extreme methods. If you're new to the film, or have
only seen it on the small screen, you are in for a treat. With souped-up
sound and rejuvenated colours, this masterpiece displays an ambition
sadly lacking in today's Hollywood.
