What next from the genre-hopping Winterbottom (9 Songs,
Code 46, 24 Hour Party People)? A film of the unfilmable
novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy? No problem.
Except its not a film of the book, but a film of the attempted
filming of an unfilmable book.
Following the film crew and director, (played
by Jeremy Northam), its a study of the madness of
filmmaking and of the limits of narrative. How much of a
story can you construct from some rambling episodes and
can it be meaningful? Steve Coogan plays Shandy, our unreliable
narrator with Rob Bryden as brother Toby, and a host of
British comedy faces - Stephen Fry, David Walliams, Shirley
Henderson, Dylan Moran...
"a rude , ruddy satire about the film
business, and an awesome tour-de-force by Steve Coogan"
Leslie Felperin, Variety.com
