Jang
Seung-ub is a penniless orphan who has a gift for art. The
painting master, Kim Byung-Moon, takes him into his care,
but Jang proves a rebellious pupil and is soon living life
to the full, whilst never fully being accepted by the society
that fêtes him. Against a backdrop of political unrest in
the unstable South Korea of the 1850s we view the life-story
of a hugely talented natural artist with an appetite for
life. This is a beautifully shot film, the brilliance of
the paintings being given full justice. A lavish depiction
of a rebel artist.
Critics
“Rewardingly
crazy…recreates the lyrical beauty of the paintings.”
