Based on The Return, a short story by Joseph Conrad, this
stunning reinvention of the period chamber drama describes
the implosion of a marriage. Patrice Chéreau's adaptationrelocated
to turn-of-the-century Paris and retitled Gabrielleis
as compact and precise as the Conrad original, but very
much like Ingmar Bergman's work in that it's mainly
composed of a series of honest and uncompromising conversations
between a husband and wife over the issue of infidelity,
and depicts a man who, shaken out of materialism and complacency,
comes to realize his need for love over security and social
acceptance.
"A film of eccentric
beauty and wild feeling... played by the supremely well-matched
Pascal Greggory and Isabelle Huppert." - Manohla Dargis,
New York Times
