Morvern Callar is the second film from Lynne Ramsay, the acclaimed director of Ratcatcher. Shot in March/April 2001 in Scotland and Spain the film stars Oscar nominee, Samantha Morton (Sweet and Lowdown) and Kathleen McDermot (new to the screen). Morvern Callar is a 21 year-old supermarket worker from a small port town in the west of Scotland. Morvern believes that life is something that you get on with as best you can with what you've got. One morning Morvern finds that what she's got is a dead boyfriend on the kitchen floor. But she doesn't tell anyone - an extraordinary choice that propels her on a journey to the south of Spain and transforms her life.

Morvern Caller was featured in the Directors Fortnight for the Cannes Film Festival 2002 where it was awarded the Prix de la Jeunesse and Decerne par la Cicae (Confederation Internationale des Cinemas d'Art et d'Essai). It then went onto open the Edinburgh International Film Festival in August of the same year. The film also featured at the Telluride, Toronto, San Sebastian (Lynne Ramsay gaining the Fipresci Grand Prix For New Director Of The Year), Dinard (Kodak award for Best Cinematography),and Stockholm Film Festivals of 2002. It was nominated for 7 British Independent Film Awards, winning a Best Actress Prize for Morton and a Best Technical Achievement award for Cinematographer, Alwin H. Kuchler.
