As
a recent weekend visitor to Keswick, I was delighted when
our friends included in our itinerary a visit to the Keswick
Film Clubs Sunday 6th October offering of the Mexican
film, Y Tu Mama Tambien. How fortunate are
the residents of this lovely Lakeland town to have opportunities
to see critically acclaimed films again as well as up-to-the-minute
box office releases in your historical Alhambra Cinema!
One of the benefits of film club membership is the very
helpful introduction and analysis of the days feature
as given in person by one of the committee and in writing
for later considered consumption. Y Tu Mama Tambien
is a classic rite of passage/road trip movie and we are
swept along in the characters journeys of discovery.
The contrasting themes of boastful machismo and sexual
tenderness are examined against the vividness of the Mexican
landscape and changing culture. At times, the film is
halted and an authorial voice informs us of the existential
dimensions such as, on the exact spot they drove over,
a terrible accident had occurred exactly ten years before.
This adds a thoughtful objectivity that, for me, gives
the film an epic feel. The nudity may be shocking at first
but these are not the images that remain. The thought-provoking,
honest and touching ones do along with the cinematography
and the outstanding acting. Thank you to Keswick Film
Club for a memorable cinematic experience and for the
inside information that we can look forward to seeing
this exciting new talent (Gael Garcia Bernal) in the forthcoming
film of Che Guevaras Motor Cycle Diaries.
