MacKendrick is better known as the director of The Ladykillers,
Whisky Galore and other Ealing comedies. This film basically
finished his career: a disaster on its release, it has become
recognised as a true classic. A brilliant depiction of the
lure of fame, and the depths to which some sink in its pursuit.
