Keswick Film Club - Reviews - Falling Into Place

I was in two minds about this film before I arrived; sold as 'an antidote to Hollywood romcoms', did that mean it was a failed love story, or just another love story with a twist? I needn't have worried – like most of the audience I loved it.

The first part of the film introduced us to two people visiting the Isle of Skye for different reasons – Kira has gone to get over her boyfriend; Ian seems to have gone to visit his parents (but is there more to it than that? We shall find out). They meet randomly in a pub, spend much of the night chatting, having fun and wandering around the streets, ending in the morning with Ian taking Kira to his parent's house, though he doesn't seem to want to even see his Dad… A phone call makes him panic and we are off to a hospital… but to see who?

The film then skips to London where Kira is still in freefall over her lost boyfriend until she seems to be recovering via a job designing the settings for a play…but she continually has flashbacks to Ian.

Ian is pretty much a failure as a musician, failing to get anyone to notice his music, living for free with his girlfriend…and having flashbacks to Kira… He seems to be getting it together too when he leaves his girlfriend and goes back to Skye to look after his sister – who has attempted suicide several times and, we realise, has been the force upsetting him.

Will our two heroes eventually meet again? Will all be resolved by them getting together, or will they continue to get their lives back on track now they seem to have found their ways forward anyway? Either ending looked possible, either would work for what had turned out to be a fairly slow, but nonetheless gripping movie. I'll let you decide what happened…
