The Other Way Around (Volveréis)
Synopsis
"A little bit like Woody Allen, or an episode of Seinfeld minus the stream of gags, this talky Spanish comedy tells the story of a couple planning a breakup party" - Cath Clarke, Guardian.
Ale and Alex make this decision, to everyone's consternation: "you are a perfect couple!" They go ahead and organise the party, sorting out who has what DVDs and who keeps the flat along the way.
"Even as they insist that they're perfectly fine about separating, the film is skilfully shot to both put Ale and Alex at odds within the frame and also show them as loving partners...Both take involving internal journeys through the narrative, dealing with their thoughts in their own ways as they speak with the people around them. And inventive touches continually add startling resonance, right to the terrific final act" - Rich Cline, Shadows on the Wall.
Critics
Trueba has drawn a funny little valentine, shot through by a bright, sharp arrow of feeling.
Jessica Kiang, Variety
In posing substantive questions about the nature of romance and relationships, it’s smarter than virtually any American studio romantic comedy of recent years.
Adam Solomons, IndieWire
A witty, cerebral film that initially evokes mature classics such as Scenes from a Marriage and Annie Hall, before veering into playfully modernist territory.
Tara Brady, Irish Times
